Important information
- PE for Year 3 is on a Thursday. Please wear the appropriate PE uniform which consists of: white t-shirt; black joggers/leggings; black hoodie/jacket if needed; trainers; hair tied up; and jewellery removed for health and safety reasons. Details involving swimming will be given at a later date.
- Homework will be sent home every Friday and books should be returned no later than the following Thursday.
- Reading records should be handed in and changed at least once a week unless children are reading a large book.
- Children are encouraged to access Times Tables Rockstars at home and have the appropriate log in details to do so; if there are any problems with logging in, please speak to your child's class teacher.

Our Learning Journey
Below you will find out about our learning journey this term.

English
In our English lessons, during the first three weeks of Year 3, we will use “The Magic Feather” By Julia Donaldson and ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ By Roald Dahl as a stimulus for our writing. Following this, we will read ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’ and ‘The Gorilla’. During this time, the children will look at a variety of previously taught skills and some new Year 3 skills. The children will start to use the following skills in their weekly ‘Star Write’
- - Powerful verbs
- - Similes to compare
- - Expanded noun phrases
- - Adverbs of manner (fronted adverbials)
- - Using ambitious vocabulary within sentences
- - Use contracted apostrophes
Every week, the children will focus on using ambitious vocabulary and newly taught skills within their writing. Watch this space for some pictures of fantastic examples of Star Writes.
Maths
In our Maths lessons, we will be focusing on the following topics for the first half term:
- Count from 0 in multiples of 4 and 8
- Find 10 more or less than a given number.
- Recognise and partition the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number.
- Compare and order numbers up to 1000.
- Add and subtract numbers mentally.
- Add and subtract numbers using formal written methods (column method).
- Estimate answers and use the inverse to check answers.

Curriculum:
Big question: How did life change from the Stone Age to the Iron age?
Our curriculum topic this term goes back in time to the prehistoric Stone Age and ends in the Iron Age.
In Geography and History, we will be looking at how life changed from the Stone Age to Iron Age using timelines, how food was gathered, farming and their homes. We will also look at Stonehenge and Skara Brae.
In Art, children will be looking at the artist Dennis Creffield. They will be creating drawings inspired by his work using line, tone, pattern, colour, texture, shape using various pencil grades.
Science:
Big Question: What’s under our skin?
In this unit children will understand that plants and animals obtain food in different ways, identify the right types of nutrition needed in a healthy diet, name different skeleton types, identify the main bones in the body and their uses, and explain how muscles work together to enable movement.
In addition, we will continue developing our scientific knowledge by setting up practical enquiry, and writing an explanations for our findings.
PSHE
Our first topic in PSHE for Year 3 will be focusing on:
R.E:
Big Question: what can we learn from visiting sacred places?
In our RE lessons, we will be focusing on looking at holy buildings from different religions and what makes a building a sacred place.
Design and Technology

Over the first weeks of the new school year, slips will be coming home with your child if they wish to present a 'This is Me' to their peers. Watch this space for updates on our first 'This is Me' presentations.
