Our Learning Journey
This half term, we have been building on our knowledge and skills from last half term. We are very much looking forward to continuing our amazing learning for the remainder of out time in Reception.
Support our understanding and writing.
English:
In Reception, we nurture a love of stories, language and mark-making through a rich and engaging English curriculum. We follow the I Am a Clever Writer principles alongside the creative approach of Drawing Club, where children explore exciting stories that inspire their imagination and learning.
Through storytelling, discussion, drawing and early writing, children develop their vocabulary, confidence and communication skills. Learning begins with lots of oral storytelling and mark-making before moving on to writing words, captions and simple sentences using their growing phonics knowledge. As the year progresses, children practise key skills such as letter formation, finger spaces and using capital letters and full stops as they begin their journey as confident, young writers.

Phonics

In Reception, we teach phonics using the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme, which helps children learn to read and write with confidence. Through fun, fast-paced daily sessions, children learn to recognise sounds, blend them together to read words and begin to use their phonics knowledge in their writing.
As children learn more sounds, they begin to read books carefully matched to their phonics knowledge. Each Friday, phonics homework will be sent home to support learning from the week, so please keep an eye out for this and enjoy practising together at home.

Maths
In Reception, we develop children’s early mathematical understanding through a fun, practical approach following White Rose Maths. Through whole-class teaching, small group activities and play-based learning, children explore important mathematical ideas such as counting, recognising numbers, comparing amounts, patterns, shapes and early calculation.
We use a range of hands-on resources such as Numicon, cubes and practical objects to help children clearly see and understand mathematical concepts. Children are encouraged to talk about their thinking, explain their ideas and solve simple problems together, helping them build confidence and curiosity in maths.
We use Ten Town to learn how to form our numbers.

Topic:
Our Reception topics change regularly throughout the year to keep learning exciting and meaningful. Through these topics, children explore the world around them while developing skills linked to the Early Learning Goals, including Communication and Language, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
Topics may include themes such as All About Me, People Who Help Us, Different Places Around the World, Growing and Changing, and Farms and Animals. In Spring 2, our topic is Transport, where children explore different types of transport from the past and present, learn about important historical figures such as the Wright Brothers, and design and create their own vehicles through construction and creative activities.
Continuous Provision:
|
In Reception, children learn best through play, exploration and hands-on experiences, which is why a large part of our day is spent in continuous provision. Our classroom includes a range of exciting areas such as construction, small world, creative art, role play, writing, maths and outdoor learning.
These areas allow children to explore their interests, practise new skills and develop independence while building important social skills. Adults support learning through play by modelling language, asking questions and extending children’s ideas. Through these experiences, children grow into confident, curious learners who are ready for the next stage of their school journey. |

Physical Education:
Physical Education is an important part of Reception life, helping children develop their coordination, balance and confidence in movement. Through fun and active lessons, children practise key skills such as running, jumping, balancing, throwing and catching.
These activities support the Physical Development Early Learning Goals while also helping children learn to follow instructions, work together and enjoy being active. Alongside PE lessons, children have many opportunities for physical play outdoors, where they can climb, ride bikes and scooters, and develop their strength and coordination while having fun.
